Further Leave to Remain (FLR) – Extend Your Stay in the UK
Extend your stay in the UK with ease and confidence. Further Leave to Remain (FLR) allows you to extend your visa from inside the UK so you can continue your life here without disruption. At Atwal Law, we provide trustworthy, affordable support with all FLR applications, whether you’re extending a spouse visa, remaining on the basis of family life, or switching to a new visa category.
What is FLR?
FLR is an extension of your permission to stay. It is usually granted for 30 months (2.5 years). In the family route, there are two main types:
• FLR(M): for spouses, civil partners, or unmarried partners of British or settled persons. This is part of the 5-year route to ILR.
• FLR(FP): for family or private life cases, such as parents of British children or those relying on human rights grounds. This is usually a 10-year route to ILR.
Who Needs FLR?
- Spouse/partner visa holders: after 2.5 years, you must apply for FLR(M) to extend for another 30 months.
- Parents of British children: FLR(FP) allows you to remain with your child in the UK.
- Private life applicants: for those who have long residence or strong ties in the UK.
- Switchers: for example, from a fiancé visa to a spouse visa after marriage.
FLR Requirements
- Valid visa: apply before your current leave expires.
- Relationship and financials: still meet the spouse visa requirements if extending via FLR(M).
- English language: A2 level is required at the first extension stage (unless already proven at a higher level).
- Documents: evidence of ongoing relationship, updated financial documents, proof of address, and English language test where required.
- Application & fees: applications are made online, with a fee and health surcharge payable.
